Tom & John, One of the problems those of us up north have (some of us have several) is brain freeze. The same sensation you get from eating ice cream to fast. When it gets real cold starting in about September - we slide into that brain freeze mode that usually doesn't stop until sometime in May. We don't intend to send our cold weather south; most of us are so numb we don't have the slightest idea what we are doing. What I am trying to say is that it is not our fault, we are the victims here. Not only do we sufferer through our own cold weather, we are blamed for everyone elses too. If you were to send some of your warm weather north, we could recover from our brain freeze, realize what we are doing and stop - everyone would be happier. So, it is not our fault in North Dakota, it has to be yours. In reference to C Company, the issue is not cold weather, but hot air. One could argue that C Company may be the yet unidentified cause of global warming. The protagonists of global warming have pointed their fingers at everything else, it is time they learn about our friends in C Company. I doubt anything can be done, but we can put the blame where it belongs.

I have a favor to ask of all of you that live in the Dakotas, Montana., Minnesota etc. Do a better job of keeping your weather up there and not letting it get so far South.Us Southern boys don"t care much for it even for just a couple of days. I'm sure you will all do your best to help us out. Thanks Tommy

To Fred Buyze. 27 months in-country is an exceptional feat – you must be an animal. I am interested in your story, where you were at, which organizations, etc. You may have more time in country than any other 589th member. Howard Getchell was in A Company, and if I remember right he did a couple of more tours after leaving the 589th, which could have brought his total time in-country to 2 to 3 years. Regardless, 27 months is a long time. My hat goes off to you for an exceptional contribution.

Best wishes and I hope you all have a very prosperous New Year! I am looking forward to seeing you all at the 2014 Reunion in Branson Sept 11th-14th. If you have been to one you know how rewarding and fun they are. If you have not then make a date to be there and you won't regret it. Nick will be giving the lecture on Character Guidance to the C Co guys since they might possibly been too intoxicated for the one 40 plus years ago. Come to think of it, I might have missed them to.

As we close out 2013 I want to say it has been a pleasure to get to renew friendships and make new friends since I went to my first reunion in 2010. I am so glad that I found the 589th and for the folks that started it! I hope everyone has a safe New Years and I look forward to working for and with you in 2014! Happy New Year!

I was incountry almost 27 months and don't remember any lectures. I spent 21 months in B Co, and the only time we had a "lecture" was when we got a new Batallion Co. This was late spring/ early summer of 69. He had all of us meet in the Mess Hall right after supper and gave us the usual bull plus he told us that if any of us were caught swearing we'd get an Article 15. After that we thought of our Batallion Motto as "THE 589TH HOLY ROLLERS".

Will do Willie. Having been through this a couple of times during my career as a Police officer I know what a devastating impact this has on a community.

I spent 18 months with Co.B from April '69-Oct. '70. I don't ever recall having a character training class. Only recall the speech always given……keep your eyes and ears open, always know your surroundings, watch for VC and traps in the jungle and on roads. Maybe there was a phantom 589th unit we weren't aware of that got the character training ??? Thanks for the info Bob.
