So, I'm sitting in a biker bar in Amarillo, Texas with some friends, and this big guy comes up to me and sticks out his hand. I see that he has an 18th. engineer patch on his vest and he asks me who I served with. I tell him 589th and his eyes light up and he starts to grin. He said he was with D co. 589th. in 1970 and 1971 and his name is Mike Stilwell, anybody remember him?. Anyway, that's two new brothers I have found in the last 30 days. It can happen anywhere and anytime, hope to see Mike and Tom McCann in September with the rest of you bums. Love and peace, out. Mike

Larry Jenkins, I represent that remark, and it's Morrish not Moorish or Mr. Morrish to you! See you in September.

While I am writing about today's soldiers, let me write about yesterday's soldiers. I occasionally have breakfast with a 90 year old WW II veteran of the 101st Airborne's jump into France on D Day. After 3 days of fighting he was captured. He had 5 bullet holes through his clothes when captured. Of the 99 guys in his airborne unit, only 46 remained with the unit after D Day (the rest were KIA, MIA, WIA, or POW). He weighed 189 pounds when captured, and weighed 123 pounds when released from the POW camp. Later he became the Command Sergeant Major for the California National Guard, and last year the French government inducted him into the French Legion of Honor as a living representative of his unit. After the war the survivors of his unit formed an association. As of last month, he is the last living soldier of the original 99 that made that jump. In thinking back, Vietnam was closer to World War II than it was to today.

I planned on making the reunion last year, but had to cancel because of a bunch of personal stuff that happened all at once (nothing really bad). One of those actions was a last minute request to provide training to an engineer unit at Fort Bragg that was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan (guess old soldiers still have something to offer). The Lieutenant Colonel commander decided he wanted all of the unit trained right down to the Private level. I'm writing this to pass on how incredibly impressed I was with the quality of today's junior soldiers. The Privates and Speedy-4s picked up on the technically difficult training every bit as fast as the officers and NCOs. They were sharp! I hate to tell you guys this - but I don't remember you as being near as sharp - or actually sharp at all. Here's to today's generation of American soldiers.

To Thomas McCann - greetings. It's great that another Company C person has been found. Come to the reunion this year. Being with us other C Company types will compensate for being good friends with Mike Moorish.

I am dismayed to see that what happened to us with the VA after Vietnam is now happening to our sons and daughters coming back from Afganistan and Iraq. It appears that the VA's attitude is better towards today's veterans, but the wait times for benefits (including educational benefits) is running into the months. I'm willing to donate towards worthy non-government veterans programs for injured veterans if anyone has recommendations.
