I am not suprised to see that Ollie was buried in his fatigues. I spoke to him several times by phone and even though he had lasting effects from Vietnam he still felt that it was the most important job he had ever done. John Engdahl (Twiggy) was the same. They were both soldiers at heart. Rest In Peace Ollie and Twiggy.

Ollie Butler, a Brother, was buried today. Per his wish, he was buried in his fatigues. That says it all.

It was very sad to see the email about Ollie Butler passing. It was a reminder to be sure to stay in contact with each other as any one of us could be next. Be sure to call your Brothers and let them know you care. I was able to speak to all four of Ollie's brothers and they were very pleased that I called to offer the sympathy of all of us. We spoke about Bill (as they called him) and how much it meant to Ollie to have atended the reunion last year and be reunited with us and they said that is all he talked about. Ollie wanted to attend this year but did not make it, now I wished I had tried harder to get him there. If you have not attended a reunion or only come when you have nothing else to do please remember that all your Brothers of the 589th want you to be there as we don't know if this will be your last time to be there or ours. Ollie was a good friend of the Earth Moving Platoon of C Company and I know we will all miss him. We were Brothers once and now are again, we needed each then and and need each other now. Reach out and say hi to your buddies! Rest in peace Ollie!

I Can't remember a lot, but I was in the 589th, in Phan Rang, then went on to Vin Hao, then on to Phan Thiet/Whiskey Mountain. I was in demo and such, I only worked in the quarries as needed... I Went from 589th to 73rd engr to 585 DT. I Was in country Jan/71 to Dec/71. I have not found anyone that remembers me, I worked in the quarry with a few guys "Ritchie"? was a D-12 operator, Burns and Patton were in the same "hooch".. Saw the pilot ( Air Force commanders relative), drop the plane out of the sky ( C-130?) (wing over) and wiped out a portion of the runway in Phan Rang. No longer can find any orders, transfer or travel...Been a LONG time and wonder if anyone has seen me on their orders or any paperwork? Thanks guys! Bill

We have a lot to be thankful for living in this great country and we all helped to make it great and continue helping make it great yet today! Our service was not appreciated at the time we gave it but now we are appreciated for what we did and much of the continue is sorry for how we were treated afterwards. Stop and give thanks for the men and women keeping us safe and great today. Now enjoy your turkey and pum[kin pie! Happy Thanksgiving!

I went over on the William O Darby in Oct 66 with the 35th Combat Engineer Battalion .I was a 90 day loss in Aug 67 and transferred to D company 589th with a buddy of mine. We were on hiway 1 some place for about a week . We then were put on the contact truck and sent to Qui Nhon to work at night on the equipment working there.

WOW! A whole bunch of us from C CO Earth Moving Platoon will be happy to know we have LT Herbert Hines and he is going to try and attend the next reunion. He plans on submitting his application to become a member so he can see everybody that has been found. I have spoken to him and it was really great. He was the best officer we had and we were all very glad that he went up north with us as he look out for us all. Welcome home LT!
