I recently completed reading Al Carlisle’s new book “Depth of Field - an Army Photographers Year in Vietnam”. “Depth of Field” took me back in time to places and events I had forgotten – a memory jogger, offering insight into the 589th Engineers during a year in its history. A nice journey, written from a perspective I was unfamiliar with. “Depth of Field” serves as a reminder of how sudden and non-discriminating death in a war zone can be. It is about taking time to remember the good and the bad each of us experienced, while keeping each of those events in perspective. Information on ordering the book can be found on the 589th Blog page.

To Henry Frei I arrived at 589th base camp A Co. about a week before Christmas 1967,six months after my 18th birthday and just in time for my first Christmas away from home and TET a few weeks later.I spent a lot of time running the auger you descibed,it was a challenge keeping it welded together and running in mid year of 68.I sometimes had to start the 6 cylinder Ford motor that powered the drive train by wrapping a rope around the the fly wheel pulley and cranking it like a pull start lawnmower.Great to meet you on line, hope to see you at the reunion. Tom p .s.I live in Cleveland Tn. Where are you?

To Tom McLain: I was in HHC and there was a Jamec C. Johnson who worked in Motor pool, lived in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., had a mustache and played a guitar really well. I've tried to locate him for several years with no luck. I have a picture of him and will bring it to the reunion. Also there was a Delbert Willis in HHC who transfered from Germany and was from Texas who played a 12 string extremely well. See you in Sept.

Welcome home, I'm the son of a vet looking to find anyone or anything out about my fathers time in at war. What I've learn so far is that he was part of the 577th (Co D I think) when it became part of the 589th. After a lot of looking I think he was a Sapper, he was a Demo expert and spent most of his time moving not actually with his unit. His name was Ronald Anderson (a.k.a Fat Daddy, Andy) He was a great man lost the battle with agent orange at 55. He just never talked about the hell that lived with in him. I love reading all of your posts Thank You for your service.
