John "Twiggy" Engdahl - John was known as "Twiggy" because of his lean physique, and as "Soft Touch" because of his willingness to help anyone at anytime for any reason. He was one of the Company C, Earthmoving Platoon members who was pinned down by flying shrapnel for 14 hours when the Camp Evans ammunition dump exploded during an enemy ground attack in May 1968. In January 1969 he was the one who got Norm Goodman into a bunker when Norm was hit by shrapnel from a mortar round at Song Pha. John would always have difficulties with his memories of Vietnam. After Vietnam he spent 4 years in Jamaica where he partied with Bob Marley and the Wailers and sailed the Caribbean. Afterwards he returned to the US where he continued to work as a construction equipment operator. During the past few years he suffered significantly from liver illness and other possible complications of Agent Orange, and was under medical care of the Veterans Administration. A truly fine man, and a soldier who could be counted on when things were bad.

I am very sorry to report that John "Twiggy" Engdahl of C Company passed away Monday, April 11, 2011. John's sister called to let me know as she found my phone number in John' cell. John never fully recovered from his service in Nam and when I spoke to him several weeks ago he was going to try and attend the reunion this year. May God bless John and his family.

I misspelled the website name in last message. This is information I found out about Agent Orange, types of defoiliant, amounts of chemicals and areas sprayed, and when they stopped spraying. Here is the correct website. www.landscaper.net/agent.htm Check it out.

Yes, the 589th was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation for its work in 1967. Perhaps we can get Perry to add it to the front of our web page. This unit award was not given lightly - and thus is something for the unit to be proud of.

Carp and All, Unfortunately there were incidents in Vietnam for which there are no records. But, one of the many great benefits of us coming together is that those of us who witnessed those incidents can provide affidavits for those who were involved.

Ricohard and All - I was fortunate to make it through Vietnam and several months of sucking down oil well smoke in Kuwait during and after Gulf I, without apparent problems other than going through some PTSD, once for each war. So I have no experience with the VA. But, I have heard great things about the Disabled American Veterans association which has helped many combat vets with assistance in working with the VA.
