Hello Brothers,
The response to an email recently sent out to all of our Members concerning a funding shortfall for this year's HOF (Honor Our Fallen) program has been absolutely amazing. Once again our 589th Brothers and friends have shown their generosity and support to the 589th's commitment in honoring our Fallen Brothers on Memorial Day. And last but not least, as we go about celebrating our Memorial Day weekend this year with family and friends, let us not forget about our forty-six, 589th Volunteers that will be spending part of their holiday weekend representing all of us at ceremonies for our twenty-six Fallen Brothers at their gravesites across America. Thank You! Essayons. We Will Never Forget. |

Dennis Cowand is submitting press releases this year for the HOF Fallen Brothers Memorial Day ceremonies. The Washington newspaper he sent the press release to for SP4 Gregory Carl Thompson would like to do a special interest piece on him and was hoping some of his brothers could help with any memories or stories they might have about Gregory.
Gregory was assigned to A Co and arrived in country on Apr 18th, 1970. He was killed on July 26th, 1970. Cause of death is listed as Non-Hostile, Died of Other Causes, accident. Anyone that has anything to add can leave a message here or send an email to 589th@589thEngineers.com. Thanks for helping Brothers. |

I went to St.Marys PA. this last weekend to meet with two brothers from D company.Tom Wildnauer and Walter Kazenski.they drove dump trucks in Nam.What a great feeling I got when I met these two men and their families. The Harrisburg/Hershey reunion is going to be held at the Red Lion Inn,they have 200 rooms,30 are blocked out for this reunion.the Red Lion Inn is pet friendly so don't let your dog be the reason you cant make this reunion, remember this reunion is for the Battalion. If your coming from the Midwest, get the tollway easy pass.It will save you half the toll cost and make it very convenient to pass through the toll booth. These toll roads are in good shape and I set my speed control at 75,cars passing me all the time.Tom,Walt and I watched my movies of the Vihn Tan airstrip hoping to identifie the guys in these films,if you operated heavy equiptment like dozers, graders, loaders, earth movers,we forgot your names.Come to this reunion and help us identifie you.Tom and Walt brought back many old memories,I want to share these with all my brothers.Go to the 2019 reunions and check it out.More info coming on this reunion.Call Walt or Perry if you need help.

I was in the 2nd platoon D company.SSgt Grahm was our platoon sergeant. Lt. Hegman was our platoon leader.I was at FT. Hood,on the Pope and Nam with this platoon.Three men in my platoon have died since Nam.I have never been to a reunion.I'm helping Walter Kazenski put together a mini reunion in Harrisburg Penn.Sept 5-8 2019 MY goal at first was just my platoon but now its for the Battalion.I'm in contact with eight men from my platoon that are going to try and make this reunion, they are mostly east coast men, thats why its in Penn.I have talked with Lt Hegman and if he can make it,he would try to bring Capt. Harbok along since their both from the east coast.I'm still trying to reach James Sipprell and Ron Giles.I have talked with Tom Wildnauer,Walter Kazenski,Steve Osche,Irv Walck,Joseph Reischman,Nikola Music,Rick Jones,Wayne Boney,Anthony Furcillo and they are interested in this reunion.I cant remember all the names [yet] but I'm working on it very hard. Please help me if you can.I also know some men from the 1st platoon and E M platoon.contact me at 815-566-2351 your call will help me very much.I'm Bruce Rittschof,I was the cement mixer operator for the platoon.17 years old, from Black River Falls,Wisc. There will be more info coming from now until the reunion.Thank You.

The following was sent to me by email from Robert Reilly. He is the person that found Sgt. Raymond Gray's photo. Raymond was the last of our Fallen Brother's we did not have a photo of.
From Bob Reilly: "Received 2 responses from the Vietnam Veterans Historical Society confirming source and picture of Sgt. Raymond Gray, a member of your unit , 589th Engineer Battalion, who died in Vietnam. The last of the unit's 26 fallen heroes. The 589th is the same unit that Henry Benny Thomas was assigned to in Vietnam and is one of the Edison 64 from Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia who died in Vietnam. Edison High School and the 589th Engineer Battalion now have a full set of pictures of every one of their fallen heroes. Bob" Thank you so much Bob. P |
