Truly regret having to miss Ft. Hood and not being able to make the C Company reunion at the Wall May 7th. I have visited the wall several times and was looking forward to being with the 589th brothers this time. Family health issues have prevented any trips for us this year. Looking forward to future reunions with better health. Raise your glasses in a toast, we will be with you in spirit at the wall.

One of our brothers, Tom Powers, C Company lost his wife and soulmate two weeks ago. Debbie had attended the reunion with Tom before her health forced her and Tom to miss the last couple of reunions. My wife, Karen, and I had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with this wonderful lady at the reunion. Tom and Debbie,s 36th anniversary was Tuesday, April 26th. She will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known her.

I stumbled into the 589th site on Military.com today. There is a message there about some one finding a 589th lighter with the name "Whitey Jr. engraved on it. The person who purchased the lighter from the pawn shop would like to return it to its 589th owner. I don't see any of our members with that name. Does "Whitey Jr." strike a memory with anyone?

It appears that the 589th must have left a reputation at Fort Hood since an entire battalion was assigned to keep you guys under control. Laugh

I decided to go to the Fort Hood Mini at the last minute. I was hesitant because I thought this was going to be all about our Fort Hood brothers that began here in 1966. I couldn't have been more wrong.

This was all about honoring and welcoming home us Vietnam Vets by the 62nd Engineer Bn. A full day of appreciation for our service that began with a bus ride led by a 30 or so motorcycle escort. All intersections were held for us, a two fire engine water cannon over the bus as we entered the motor pool passing by what seemed like an endless line of applauding troops. More troops shook our hands and thanked us as we made our way into the hangar filled with more applauding troops. A giant castle displayed photos and names of our 26 Vietnam Losses. Our 589th history was presented one at a time by 8 or so troops from memory. Army Engineer equipment was staged for us to look at while more troops shared their knowledge to us about it.
Lunch at the mess hall, a memorial service, and a hell of a good time to wrap it all up at the local NCO/Officer club surrounded by more of the 62nd Engineer's finest men and women.

My only regret is that I did not know more about what was planned because if I had I would have encouraged more to come. It was a "Welcome Home" like none I had ever experienced!

Just got home from the reunion at Fort Hood, Texas and it was the best reunion ever. To the ones that was not there it was the welcome home we never got. It was awesome. The 62th did a wonderful job at making us feel so special, it could not have been more perfect.

How about the 50th anniversary of the 589th at Fort Hood Texas. Dennie Pendergrass, you done a great job getting this to gather. this reunion was the best one we ever had. We did something all day Thursday. CSM Miles did a great job getting this all to gather. Everyone that miss this one missed the best one yet. It is time that we moved the reunion from Branson to some place else. Our members are burnt out on Branson. Lets try to come up with some place else to have the reunion next year.
