South of FB Charlie (?) on QL-1 there was a nasty streatch of the road known as the SAlt Flats. This was where Charlie was very active. The Artillery couolodn't reach this area. Coming back from fixing the Bridge Above Phan Thiet in the Middle of the Salt Flats one of our Low Boy's hit a mine and blew the rear dfual off the right side of the trailer. They got the Bucket Loader off and fixed the Axles and we "GOT THE HELL OUT OF DODGE". We all made the trip ok but Dual, the Bucket Loader Driver had to drive his Machine all the way back to Phan Rang, lucky for him we stopped at all 3 Fire Bases again and it took nearly 2 weeks before we returned.

So many really great contributions starting to come in. They mean so much to me for sure. Some of these events can go without being spoken of. People we were close to and appreciated just suddenly gone. It is a haunting that I think can only be dealt with under an excellent format provided for us by Perry , Jenkins, Pendergrase and others who really do care abut us all. So thanks for what you've done Nodof

I had to smile to myself as I read Fred Buyze’s post below. I have never had the opportunity to meet Fred in person, nor do I remember every visiting with him on the phone, but we have had written communications back and forth for several years now. Fred has an unbelievable memory – especially for details. Most of us remember the big things, but Fred remembers EVERYTHING. I don’t have Fred’s permission to say this, but he has written a number of very interesting stories about everyday life in Vietnam. Fred doesn’t claim to be a professional writer, but he does a very good job of taking the reader back to the fear, drudgery and routine we knew as Vietnam. If you ask as I have, Fred may share one with you.

Dennis Knight……Thanks for clearing up the orderly room story. I have been giving Bill Heflin such a bad time about getting the Orderly Room stories mixed up, he may never post again. Although I give him a bad time, Bill’s memory is far better than mine. It is not hard to visualize the officers and platoon sergeants bailing out of that tent when they thought they were being fragged.

For those who do not know, Dennis Knight (Dec 69 - Jul 70) is one of our new members from B Company. Thanks for feeling confident enough, Dennis, to post on the Guestbook. We do have one rule, however, which is your post doesn’t always have to be accurate. One of your Brothers will always follow behind and straighten you out. Welcome aboard.

Bill Heflin……my Brother and friend. As soon as someone questioned you about your story of our Orderly Room being blown-up, you drag poor Conforti’s name into the fray. Good try Brother! Before it is over, I don’t doubt you’ll drag other so called “witnesses” into the fracas. You said the story happened after you left Phan Rang….the hole in your story is that Conforti left Vietnam even before you did, so he couldn’t have possibly been there to see it. With your age and all, you are probably confusing the Orderly Room story with something else going on in your head. But don’t let it bother you Bill; it is part of the aging process and it will eventually get all of us. We always did turn to you to lead the way.

The event that I am talking about happened in Phan Rang after I was gone. This is a story that was told to me over the phone by Conforti.

Bill Heflin.….my good brother. What are you talking about? Our orderly room being blown up? I have to ask, are you drunk or on drugs of some sort? Although most good decisions originated there, that was not the orderly room, it was the outhouse. And your fingerprints were all over that event, so I won’t say any more. If you want people to believe your orderly room story, you are going to have to give us more information?
