From Mai Loc by the DMZ to Phan Thiet on the southern tip it looks like the 589th can boast of literally covering the whole country. Curious to see how many other Units did that? Maybe the Board Member that is the Historian (If is is not now Denny) could try and find out. Just another tidbit to go in our history!
Reply Nick, don't forget the big VN map only shows operations in I and II Corp, so for those areas you are pretty accurate. However, as far as I know we did not have operations in III and IV Corp. The inset shows the area depicted in S. Vietnam.

B Co. also got down by Phan Thiet in the fall of 1969 on a repair Convoy. We hit all 3 Fire Bases between Phan Rang and Phan Thiet and stopped at a blown bridge about 12 Klicks North of Phan Thiet, fixed the By-pass etc. and then headed back North!

Anyway, we were down there building a camp for the Infantry or the Marines , so they could launch a campaign against a buildup of enemy in that area. So thats what we were up to down there.. :toast: Nodof

I did an illustration for Dennie here some time back, of Sgt Gunney dis manteling a 155 howitser round buried in a dirt pile in the middle of the road. The whole convoy sitting at dead stop. The road was already asphalt, Billy had unloaded his D-7 and placed the blade where it would deflect at least some of any explosive force from the booby trap. The dirt pile had a live grenade in it with the pin already pulled, and only the weight of the dirt holding the lever down. Could have lost Gunney right there if he hadnt spotted it in time as the dry dirt fell away . He was feeling around in the pile for wires or other stuff, and as Dennis Knight and I were looking right down at this scene from the Guntruck. A wow moment.

Perry,
I'll do some checking in my notes about the road. For some reason I thought we went down to Phan Theit to do some work but didn't actually have any responsibility on the road.

Joseph,
Yeah, you gotta get up pretty early to get a leg up on Willie. Very interesting comment Brother. I enjoyed reading it. If you can convince Dennie, our Historian, that the road to Phan Thiet is ours, I'll paint it red Brother.

What say you Dennie?

Well here goes a little bit of a note, just cuz I dont want to be totally outdone by that Old Fart Bonney!! Noticed on the map we finally got the red line up to Dak To. Awesome! We were assigned to the 937th Combat Engrs very close to there clearing jungle and widening roadbed ahead of our Asphalt folks. Quite an experience for us kids. Now if we could just get that line to go to Phan Thiet it would be on the money....Dennis Knight was on that adventure, as was Billy Victorin and Sgt Gunney...Smile. Nodof! :toast:

Perry My Brother, I try to write on our web site as much as possible. Some times I piss people off with my comment. But you know me, I am from the south, and damn proud of it, and really don't give a shit to what people say. I enjoy reading what people post. Later Brother.
Reply We still love you, Brother, no matter what you say. It might be that we're all just getting to be "Old Farts". I've noticed they don't care as much if they tick people off!
